The team at Morton Waters Communications are thrilled to have been awarded the Small Business of the Year accolade at the Sussex Business Awards.

The Sussex Business Awards celebrate the ‘best of the best’ in the region: the companies and individuals that have achieved outstanding results over the past twelve months, and are making a positive, provable impact on people, profit, and the planet.

“To be identified as the very best small business in Sussex is an incredible achievement for the team at Morton Waters Communications,” says Michelle Morton, Director of Morton Waters Communications.

“Our unwavering belief in our company values – quality, collaboration, curiosity, and integrity – steer us to success, as we continue to deliver outstanding results for our clients in the construction sector, while fostering a positive and productive team culture here at the agency.”

Outstanding results for clients in the construction sector

The judges at the Sussex Business Awards were impressed with the team’s track record of delivering effective marketing and PR campaigns for clients working in the built environment.

“We believe it is our commitment to client service which has led to our success,” adds Michelle. “We’ve made it our business to take care of our clients’ businesses. We measure our success by theirs and aren’t satisfied until they are.”

“Our company is growing faster than we expected. We’re getting a lot more enquiries for bigger projects,” said Tony Hill, Managing Director of Eden Facades. Read more about how PR and marketing were used to help Eden Facades win more higher-value clients, here.

Creating a positive working environment

The judges were equally impressed by the dedication shown to fostering an inclusive, happy, and productive workforce, and the steps taken to support team members.

“We look after our employees, so they look after our clients and champion the agency,” says Michelle.

“We’re committed to breaking down the barriers that keep some talented professionals from the workplace by offering flexible working hours and agreeing a working schedule that fits in with their commitments and lifestyle.

“We don’t believe our team need to be deskbound from 9am-5:30pm to achieve great things; as long as our clients are supported and high quality work is delivered, we’re happy.”

A dedication to eco-conscious practices

The team’s proactive support of the Anti-Greenwash Charter – a scheme designed to help businesses adopt and adhere to responsible marketing communications practices and procedures –  caught the attention of the panel of judges, with the team at Morton Waters helping to develop and promote the initiative.

Research by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) found that up to 40% of green claims made online in 2021 could be misleading.

“As industry professionals, we are committed to upholding good standards of responsible marketing practice for our clients and ourselves,” says Michelle.

More than 60 product manufacturers, architects, trade associations, developers and many other types of organisations in the built environment industry have now taken steps to address the issue of greenwashing by publishing a Green Claims Policy and signing the Anti-Greenwash Charter.

The team at Morton Waters have also started the journey to achieving B Corp Certification, a designation given to companies that demonstrate high social and environmental performance.

“This is very much the start of what we see as an ongoing commitment to improving our impact on society and the planet,” says Michelle. “There’s lots to learn, and we’re excited about how working through the B Corp Certification process will shape the future of Morton Waters.”

The awards took place at a gala event at the Grand Brighton on 30 November 2023, presented by comedian and novelist, Mark Watson.
